abstract

the most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene found in human cancer is p53. in a normal situation, p53 is activated upon the induction of dna damage to either arrest the cell cycle or else induce apoptosis. however, when mutated, p53 is no longer able to properly accomplish these functions. our aim was to investigate p53 protein alteration in cases of basal cell carcinoma (bcc) and compare it with the control group. we investigated p53 gene expression in 41 cases of basal cell carcinoma and 20 patients with benign skin disease as control group. the alteration of p53 protein was investigated by immunohistochemistry method. the data were analyzed using spss package, t and chi-square tests. twenty eight out of 41 basal cell carcinoma and 3 out of 20 control were p53-mutated, and there was a statistically significant difference in cases of bcc in comparison with controls (2 test; p= 0.0001). taken together, showing alteration of p53 protein, our findings could add to the knowledge that might contribute to the self-maintenance of cancer cells and development of basal cell carcinoma.

ANGIOGENESIS ASSESSMENT IN BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is currently the most common cutaneous cancer found in humans. Although it generally shows a relatively benign course (BCCl), some cases show aggressive behavior (BCC2). Until recently, traditional histologic diagnostic criteria have failed to discriminate unequivocally between BCC 1 and BCC2. In this study we selected 50 cases of BCC and categorized them into tw...

The Study for Diagnostic Value of β-Catenin Immunohistochemistry Marker in Distinction of Aggressive and Non-Aggressive Basal Cell Carcinoma

Background & Objective: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common skin cancer arising from the basal layer of the epidermis and its appendages. They are locally invasive, aggressive, and destructive of skin and the surrounding structures. β-Catenin is a multifunctional protein located to the intracellular side of the cytoplasmic membrane coded by the CTNNB1 gene, which maps to chr...

Gli 1 protein expression in different types of basal cell carcinoma

Background and aim: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in humans. Activation of Hedgehog (Hh) signal has a key role in development of BCC. The end result of Hedgehog signal are Gli proteing. Gli 1 is a member of this family which activates DNA transcription. Previous studies showed increased expression of Gli 1 in BCC.Materials and methods: In this study 38 pathologic samples ...

Basal cell carcinoma of the lower extremities

Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common form of skin cancer, usually occurs in the sun-exposed areas of the body like head and neck, yet is also seen in unexpected sites. Myriad studies have mentioned a lower limb BCC incidence rate of 1.5-13.5%.Methods: The present retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 650 BCC patients, who were referred to the dermatology tumor ...
